My name is Derek and have been a part of the hospital system for 27 years.  As a stupid young 17 year old in the mid 70’s, I dropped a heap of L.S.D. and woke up in a mental ward.  Decades on and after having many Doctors try just about the whole chemistry set on me, I still enjoy the up’s and down’s experienced by every one.  Throughout the years, I’ve noticed some narrow minded redneck’s who consider mental health as a criminal condition, not an increasingly growing health issue.  Statistics prove 1 out of every 4 members of the population will experience a mental illness.  Although we are not as noticeable as someone who is missing an arm or another appendage, the mentally mutilated are everywhere.  At Canefields, we draw comfort from each other with support from staff away from the over worked hospital’s to places like ours who have the time to treat you as a person not just a patient.

I was a student here for 2 and a half months and I am now continuing to work here during my uni holidays.

Have you ever been to a different country?

Yes I have traveled quite a bit.  I have recently spent 3 months in the UK and Europe.  I have also been to New Zealand, Malaysia and Fiji.
