Position Description

Rehabilitation Worker

Reports to: Director

1.         Mission Statement

Canefields Clubhouse Beenleigh Inc mission is to assist adults with a mental illness in developing the skills and confidence necessary to lead satisfying and productive lives in their community.  This assistance is provided in a psychosocial program designed to empower and support its members.

2.         Broader Context

Canefields Clubhouse is primarily funded by Queensland Health.  The continued funding of the service is dependent on achieving agreed outcomes and ongoing governmental program support.

3.         Program Description

Canefields Clubhouse is a prevocational and vocational program for adults aged 18 years and over with a mental illness.  The program is based on the International Centre for Clubhouse (ICCD) clubhouse model of psychiatric rehabilitation.

The program improves the prevocational, vocational, social, recreational and living skills of members and encourages them to return to employment or study where appropriate.  The program supports members in paid employment.  Canefields also addresses isolation and quality of life issues, improves access to safe and affordable housing, links program members to local community activities and works with the local community to improve their understanding of mental illness.

The program provides education to the community.  The program promotes the integration of people with a mental illness into the community.  Essential to the effectiveness of the program is the involvement of members in all aspects of service planning, operation, evaluation and decision making.

4.         Position Description

The primary responsibility of a Support worker in this position is to provide:-

Catering Unit

The support worker will provide bottom line responsibility for operation of the catering unit and work with staff and members to ensure that they are working side by side in the daily operation of the unit.  This responsibility will include:-

·         Menu Planning

·         Budgeting

·         Food Preparation

·         Operation of Coffee Shop

·         Understand and practice work place health and safety standards within Clubhouse

Case Management Support

Provide treatment related support to members through an initial needs assessment and interview.  This initial interview will be conducted by the Program Manager or Director.  From this assessment a plan will be developed around member needs.  This may include supporting members to maintain and expand their normal social role and links to maintain and expand their normal social role and links within their community, returning to paid employment, education, support with life skills, housing, finances and the coordination and monitoring of other support services accessed by the members.

Family and Peer Support

Offer family and peer support to develop networks and participation in social activities.

Community Awareness and Education

Support and train members to make presentations to local community groups, schools, service clubs, seminars and other NGO’s on the issues surrounding mental health.  Encourage member participation in local activities during Mental Health Week and working with other mental health providers in the area to support the reduction in stigmatisation and marginalization experienced by those with mental health issues.

In keeping with the philosophy of the Clubhouse, staff are expected to be involved in all areas of running of the Clubhouse.  The rehabilitation worker is expected to complete the general duties required of all program staff.

Flexibility of hours will be required as the position will involve some evening or weekend work.

The person in this position is expected to:

4.1     Promote program development in accordance with the ICCD Clubhouse Philosophy as outlined in the International Standards and ensure outcomes which meet the Commonwealth Disability Standards.

4.2            Develop opportunities in the Catering unit, ie catering/garden & maintenance unit and administration to support member participation.

4.3            Assist members to set realistic goals, develop a plan, and support the revision of this plan periodically.

4.4            Assist members to learn skills and gain confidence.

4.5            Assist with the development of appropriate linkages with other community agencies, clinical services and other programs.

4.6            Monitor and report on outcomes achieved as per funding agreement with Queensland Health.

4.7            Practice within the relevant legislative frameworks and be aware of statutes that may have special pertinence for their individual practice.

4.8            Comply with Occupational Health and Safety policies in a range of settings.

4.9            Support members to provide presentations to community groups, re: Mental illness and the Clubhouse model.

4.10            Participate in social and recreational program, being involved in evening and weekend work when required.

4.11            Participate in education and performance management activities and colleague training.

4.12            Be involved in the writing of employment program reports and meeting reporting requirements of the program’s funding bodies.

4.13            Act as a role model for members – in terms of appropriate attitudes, behaviour and dress standards with the Clubhouse work and social setting.

5.         Selection Criteria

5.1        Experience in developing a range of supported education programs/placements.

5.2        Experience in the operation of vocational rehabilitation programs for people with a mental illness.

5.3        Demonstrated ability to manage programs in a way that insuresmaximum consumer participation.

5.4        Ability to demonstrate/forge strong collaborative working relationships with Mental Health Clinics, Hospitals etc.

5.5        Highly developed communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

5.6        Appropriate qualifications will be highly regarded

5.7        Previous experience/knowledge of the Clubhouse Model would be an advantage.

5.8        Experience/knowledge in working with people with a mental illness.

5.9        Must possess a current open manual C-Class Drivers License valid in Queensland and be willing to drive van to provide transport options for members.

6.         Performance Requirements

All staff are required to participate in an annual performance

Review with the Director.  The principal document used will be the staff member Job Description coupled with annual objectives set in discussion with the Director and relevant to program development
