During 2007 Canefields Clubhouse recognised the need for the provision of safe, fair and affordable credit, without interest or fees being made available to people living with a mental illness on low incomes. The introduction of the No Interest Loans Scheme commenced in 2008 further enhancing the support network provided by Canefields Clubhouse, offering people living with a mental illness the opportunity to improve financial capabilities and enhance community participation. Canefields Clubhouse's No Interest Loans Scheme started on the 3rd of August and we have already started loaning to our Member's who are interested in getting a loan of up to $1200. Canefields Clubhouse will not only be loaning to Clubhouse members but to anyone within the community with a diagnosed mental illness, although loans are limited so it will be first in who get the loans while the others will have to be put on a waiting list. The No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) is a registered trademark with Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services. Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services has Been involved in the development and expansion of No Interest Loans program since there inception. in 1981 Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services started its first The No Interest Loans Scheme in Victoria, with the funding, foresight, vision and generosity of Good Shepherd Sisters. at the end of 1997, the Victorian NILS network assumed responsibility for the ongoing development and coordination of this work. this project has resulted in the significant growth in The No Interest Loans Scheme based on the Good Shepherd model throughout Australia. No Interest Loans Schemes offer people on low incomes the opportunity to access credit for an essential household items without any fees, charges or interest payments. The No Interest Loans Scheme is committed to achieving a more just and equitable society for people living on low incomes by promoting economic and social participation in a market which has resulted in structural and financial forms of exclusion Local State Networks play an important role in ensuring the success of NILS programs around Australia. They provide a invaluable forum for the exchange of information and support for existing schemes as well as for those community organisations interested in the development of new NILS schemes. Queensland holds State network meetings bi-annually, where training and information sharing in the area microfinance are included in the meetings agenda
